Welcome to our Concepts in Astronomy website!

ASTRO 100 - Basic Concepts in Astronomy: 3 hrs, 3 cr.

This is an introductory, one-semester astronomy course designed for non-science majors. Topics include: basic observational features of the night sky, and their explanations; the Copernican revolution and Kepler's laws of planetary motion; Newton's laws of motion and gravitation. Origin and properties of the Solar System: the planets, asteroids, meteoroids, and comets. Properties of light, and how it reveals the nature of its source. Origin, properties, and evolution of the Sun and other stars, including giants, dwarfs, supernovae, neutron stars, and black holes. The Milky Way, and other galaxies. Cosmology: Hubble's Law and the expanding universe, from the Big Bang to the present; future scenarios.
